where the grass is green and the girls are pretty: GnH concert recap
Any attempt to put this into coherent paragraphs is almost definitely going to devolve into me capslocking my sexual frustration, so have some bullets instead!
- For some context: this was my second time seeing Charlene and my first time seeing everyone else (to my eternal dismay, I never got a chance to see STF before they broke up), and I got to do it all with one of my best friends from undergrad.
- When we walked into the concert venue, the first thing I saw was Mia and Charlene having a drink and talking at the bar, and I nearly went comatose from suppressed excitement.
- I will say this: before yesterday, I did not really believe people when they said that Mia is hotter in person than she is in pictures.
- I believe them now.
- Seriously.
- She is so.
- so
- so
- so
- hot.
- also she was wearing glow-in-the-dark eyeshadow and some sort of magical top that made her chest look even more perfect than normal and I nearly died.
- ANYWAY.
- New York’s Finest, the Police tribute band playing the first set, were really quite decent, but the highlight of their performance for me was definitely that all 4 GnH ladies were rocking out right in front of where I was standing the whole time. Charlene kept playing air guitar and attempting to do splits and they were all goofing off with each other and being generally the greatest.
- Also during this set! Liann Kaye came and sat down right next to where I was, and I got to introduce myself and tell her how much I adore her videos. She looked like a freaking rockstar - the Kaye sisters definitely won ALL OF THE GENETICS LOTTERIES.
- I also awkwardly introduced myself to Stephanie Walsh, who was completely sweet even though I was being at pretty much the top of my Socially Awkward Penguin 4lyfe game.
- When they were finished, New York’s Finest introduced GnH as the “rock star fantasy camp.” MOST ACCURATE EVER.
- Which brings us to….
- THE SHOW.
- IT WAS AWESOME
- SERIOUSLY.
- SO AWESOME.
- I think the best thing was - slightly to my surprise - how well they function as a cohesive band, given that they’re all such superstars in their own right. I mean, this was undoubtedly Erin’s party (and she BROUGHT IT, good lord, if someone doesn’t upload a video of Welcome to the Jungle, I may cry into my pillow because I need to rewatch her sexy-as-all-hell dance moves forever and ever), but they all had seriously sizzling chemistry together and they were beautifully in synch and were obviously just having a fantastic time getting to jam out together.
- I know this because at one point Erin shouted out if everyone was having a good time, to which Mia responded something along the lines of, “we don’t care if you’re having a good time! We’re having a fucking fantastic time!”
- Their on-stage banter was pretty much awesome in all the ways, actually; Emily kept stealing Mia’s drink until Mia finally snatched it away and asked if anyone in the audience would offer up their drink instead.
- ERIN’S VOICE OH MY GOD.
- ALSO HER DANCING.
- GOOD LORD.
- CHARLENE’S GUITAR SOLOS WERE AMAZING.
- DITTO EMILY.
- (MY OBSESSION WITH EMILY’S HAIR IS NOT WANING ANY TIME SOON, BTW)
- AND MIA ROCKED THE FUCK OUT OF THAT BASS SO HARD.
- The audience was pretty fantastic. I really, really hope that someone recorded Paradise City - it was kind of a magical moment that involved *everyone* jamming and singing along on the chorus.
- Speaking of the audience….
- Devon was standing next to me during the whole GnH set!
- HE IS SO ATTRACTIVE.
- LIKE GUT-PUNCHINGLY ATTRACTIVE
- SO
- RIDICULOUSLY
- ATTRACTIVE
- I CANNOT.
- And I was kinda doing my awkward jamming out next to him until the show was over, at which point I (awkwardly, obv) turned to him and was all “sorry to bother you, but I really loved your stuff with Shoot the Freak!” and he was pretty much the biggest sweetheart in the universe and shook my hand and gave me a hug and thanked me and told me not to be shy.
- It was pretty fantastic.
- He has really nice arms.
- ANYWAY.
- After the show, I tried to go around and catch everyone, but unfortunately Erin slipped out before I could see her, and Mia was talking to people the entire time and I didn’t want to interrupt her.
- (Instead, I just stood there awkwardly while she was talking to everyone else. She did smile at me and touched my arm when she went past, though, and that was enough to send my ridiculous fangirl heart aflame).
- I did get to talk to Emily, and I told her how much I loved her music and she said she likes my name and she gives awesome hugs and she is JUST REALLY AWESOME GENERALLY.
- ALSO HER HAIR. JUST SAYING.
- I also got to tell Charlene how amazing she was, and, to my complete shock, she was all “oh, hey, you were at that Philly gig, right?” and I was all “OH MY GOD HOW DO YOU REMEMBER ME OH MY GOD I HAVE TO GO DIE NOW.”
- I am incredibly articulate in the face of people I fangirl, jsyk.
- And that was pretty much it! All in all, it was an utterly fantastic night, and I am so, so glad I went.
- THE END.
